Deadlines for repeat examinations

If you fail an examination, you must

- for semi-annual examinations in the next semester
- for annual examinations in the semester after next

independently re-register for the examination in the respective examination registration phase via Jogustine.

Under no circumstances is there an "automatic" registration by the Examination Office.

IMPORTANT:
If you miss these deadlines, the missed repeat examination is deemed to have been taken in accordance with Section 18 Para. 4 sentence 3 i.V.m. § 5 para. 8 sentence 1 of the regulations for the examination in the two-subject Bachelor's degree program of Departments 02, 05 and 07 .

If you are ill on your examination date, please print out the certificate template and have it completed by your doctor. Please remember that you must go to the doctor no later than the day on which the examination takes place. Please send the certificate by e-mail to: PruefungsamtFB02@uni-mainz.de. Get well soon!

IMPORTANT: Please submit certificates for the module examinations in Sport and Sport Science directly to the study office of the Institute of Sport Science!

Inspection requests

Requests to inspect written examinations and assignments must generally be submitted to the office of the lecturer responsible.

Performance statements

B.Ed. students receive their transcript of records from the HPL (for B.A. of Education: University Examination Office).

B.A. students receive their transcript of records from the central examination office of FB 02 if their major subject is a subject from FB 02. If you have a core subject that is not represented in FB 02, please contact the study office of your core subject.

Please request your transcript of records by e-mail, stating your matriculation number and your subjects. Your transcript of records will then be made available to you as a PDF via Jogustine.

If you would like a written statement of benefits, please note that statements of benefits can only be sent in return for a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Exam withdrawal/withdrawal Bachelor and Master students

Please note that independent exam deregistration in Jogustine is only possible during the exam registration phase.

See § 11 para. 4 of the regulations for examinations in the two-subject Bachelor's degree program of Departments 02, 05 and 07:
"Timely and binding registration is required for participation in module examinations and partial module examinations."
"The examination and registration deadlines are announced at the beginning of the semester. After the registration deadline, withdrawal is only possible in justified individual cases."

You can make an appointment for consultation hours at the central examination office of Faculty 02 here. This is primarily for issuing certificates. You do not need an appointment to register your thesis, this is still possible by e-mail. Consultation hours are by appointment only . Although masks are no longer compulsory in the Georg Forster building, we ask that you continue to wear a mask during consultation hours.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, please cancel at least 30 minutes before your appointment! If you will be late, please inform us by phone or e-mail!

The HPL is exclusively responsible for the final theses of all B.Ed. and M.Ed. students, even if the thesis is written in Educational Sciences, Social Studies or Sport. Please inform yourself there about the procedure.

Two-subject Bachelor's degree program: usually at the beginning of the sixth semester, provided that at least 120 credit points have been earned, of which at least 80 in the core subject. Exception: Journalism Studies - usually at the beginning of the fourth semester, provided at least 80 credit points have been earned, of which at least 60 in the core subject
Bachelor of Sport and Sport Science: at the beginning of the sixth semester, provided at least 120 credit points have been earned.
The following applies to all: Credit points are only credited once a module has been fully completed. Credit points from modules that have not yet been completed are not included in the calculation.

Bachelor's degree programs: You must register for the Bachelor's thesis by the end of the sixth year of study (end of the 12th semester), otherwise you will receive a failed attempt due to missing the deadline. If you have reasons for extending the deadline (illness or disability, pregnancy, raising children, caring for relatives, studying abroad, membership of statutory university committees), please contact the Legal and Examinations Office in good time before the deadline (see "Examinations Office" for contact details).

Master's degree programs: You must register for the Master's thesis by the end of the fourth year of study (end of the 8th semester), otherwise you will receive a failed attempt due to missing the deadline. If you have reasons for extending the deadline (illness or disability, pregnancy, raising children, caring for relatives, studying abroad, membership of statutory university committees), please contact the Legal and Examinations Office in good time before the deadline (see "Examinations Office" for contact details).

You can find out who may be the supervisor of a thesis for the two-subject Bachelor's degree program from § 8 para. 2 of the regulations for the examination in the two-subject Bachelor's degree course or the corresponding paragraphs of the regulations for the examination in the Bachelor's degree courses in Sport and Sports Science or Psychology or the Master's examination regulations applicable to you.

As a rule, these are all professors, habilitated professors, research assistants, lecturers and teaching staff for special tasks. If in doubt, please contact the central examination office.

At least one reviewer should be a university lecturer in Faculty 02 or habilitated. Consequently, a thesis can, for example, be supervised by a research assistant as the first reviewer, while the second reviewer is a university lecturer.

If the Bachelor's or Master's thesis is to be completed at an institution that is not part of Faculty 02, the Chair of the Bachelor's Examination Board or the Chair of the Master's Examination Board must give their prior consent. In this case, please contact the Central Examinations Office (Legal and Examinations Office - Mr. Bieniakonski) at an early stage before contacting potential external supervisors.

This is possible if you print out the relevant application and both reviewers sign that they agree to it.

You think about a topic for your thesis and contact potential supervisors. The topic must be discussed with them in advance, as the examiners are responsible for issuing the topic and candidates are not entitled to a specific topic. Then print out the application for registration of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. Then have the form signed by the examiner after the topic has been agreed. The examiner may modify or reject your topic. You are also not entitled to a specific examiner as the supervisor of your thesis.

Please note: Some institutes have an overview on their homepage of which examiners are available for which subjects and how many supervisions are still available.

If the supervisor agrees to supervise your thesis, complete the application form and have it signed by him or her. He or she will recommend a second supervisor, who will then be entered on the form.

You must submit the completed application to the Central Examination Office by email (PruefungsamtFB02@uni-mainz.de) within a maximum of three working days.

You will then receive a written admission letter stating your topic and the submission date by e-mail and post.

The processing period begins with the registration of the thesis at the examination office.

Here are the individual production deadlines:

A topic can be returned once within the first two weeks of the processing time in both Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. A new topic must be agreed immediately within four weeks. The application form must be completed and signed again by the supervisor.

If you miss the submission deadline, the work is deemed to have been failed. You will then only have one more attempt.

Deadline extensions are only possible in the following cases and only with written proof:

In the event of illness, provided that a certificate specifically states the duration of the illness and inability to take examinations - a simple certificate of incapacity to work is not sufficient. An extension is also granted in the event of death in the family or other reasons for which the student is not responsible.

You submit your written application and proof to the central examination office by email. The reason will be checked there. You will receive written notification as to whether or not the application has been granted and when the processing period ends.

The thesis is submitted to the central examination office by e-mail to: PruefungsamtFB02@uni-mainz.de. Please do not forget to confirm in writing that you have written the thesis independently and have not used any sources or aids other than those specified. You will find a template for this declaration in the download area on the right. You will also receive the declaration and a sample title page from us by email after registration.
You must also confirm that you have taken note of the regulations for safeguarding good scientific practice in research and teaching and the procedure for dealing with scientific misconduct. You can find these regulations here.

Your thesis will then be forwarded to the two reviewers by the Examination Office.

The assessment procedure for Bachelor's and Master's theses should not exceed six weeks.

If the work is not handed in on time, it will be graded as "insufficient" (5.0).

As soon as the grades of the first and second assessor are available, they will be published in Jogustine. Please arrange a date for the final oral examination in good time. This should take place within four weeks of the end of the assessment procedure.

As soon as your grade has been published, you can request your reports by e-mail (PruefungsamtFB02@uni-mainz.de).

Please note: The Examination Office does not give out grades in advance; neither during consultation hours nor by telephone or email. Please refrain from asking such questions!

In the Bachelor's degree program:

The candidate presents the content of their Bachelor's thesis for a maximum of five minutes. Then questions and tasks are asked about the context of the Bachelor's thesis and questions about another module, which has been agreed in advance with the examiners.

Oral final examination in the core subject of Journalism:

The subject of the examination is two topics from the modules of the core subject, which must be agreed with the examiners in advance.

In the Master's program:

The candidate presents the content of their Master's thesis for a maximum of ten minutes. Questions and tasks relating to the context of the Master's thesis are then asked. In some subjects, a further module is the subject of the final oral examination. This can be found in the subject-specific appendix of the examination regulations for your degree program.

Students of FB 02 may be present as listeners if the examination candidate does not object. They can express their veto until the start of the oral examination.

Interested parties must submit an application 3 weeks before the oral examination to the examiner of the oral examination, who will decide on such applications according to the number of places available. The public nature of the examination does not extend to the deliberations and the announcement of the examination result.

After the oral examination and after all outstanding examinations have been taken, the Examination Office will issue your certificate, transcript of records and diploma supplement in German. You will be informed immediately by email when you can collect your final documents from us (during office hours, Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with prior registration at: https://www.sozialwissenschaften.uni-mainz.de/bachelormaster/sprechstunde/). Your documents can only be issued if you have already successfully completed all modules at this point. Please bear in mind that it takes some time to prepare your documents and that we have six weeks to complete your documents in accordance with the examination regulations.

If your final oral exam is not your last exam, please inform us by email as soon as all your modules have been completed so that we can prepare your documents.

If you are unable to collect your certificate during office hours, you are welcome to authorize someone else to collect it. Please authorize the person collecting it to do so. We will also send you your documents on the following condition: Please send us a stamped envelope. Make sure that the envelope (B4) has sufficient postage. You will receive your certificate, transcript of records and diploma supplement. Alternatively, you can send us an electronic stamp. Please always state your current address.

Plagiarism or citation errors are not a trivial offense, but lead to failure of the thesis. Please avoid this risk in your own interest.

You have two attempts at both the Bachelor's and Master's thesis. If you have failed for the first time, you must register a new topic within six weeks of receiving notification of failure by submitting the form to the Examinations Office again.

There are three attempts at the final oral examination for the Bachelor's and Master's degree, whereby the second and third attempt must take place within six months. If this deadline is missed, a further 5.0 will be recorded.
To obtain a further appointment, the candidate must contact the examiner to arrange an appointment. To do so, please use the appropriate form and submit it to the Examinations Office 14 days before your examination date so that an official invitation can be issued. Oral final examinations without a prior official invitation are invalid.

Electronic submission (by e-mail) of completed applications to the Examination Office is sufficient!

Explicit exam registration: You must register separately in Jogustine each semester for the exams you wish to take in that semester. Please note: You must repeat failed examinations in the following semester and register yourself to repeat the examination. There is no automatic registration!

When do I have to register? You must register within the examination registration deadlines. Please also note the times when the deadlines expire. Please register for examinations within the first few days of the deadline and do not wait until the last day. You can save the deadline as a reminder on your cell phone, for example.

Where should I go if I have problems with exam registration in Jogustine? First you need to contact the Jogustine service by phone or web form:

Only if you cannot be helped there (!), please send an email to pruefungsamtfb02@uni-mainz.de within the registration deadline with a precise list of the examinations for which you would like to register (B.A. or B.Ed.?, core or minor subject?, which module?). If the e-mail arrives within the deadline, it is considered to be a timely exam registration.

What happens if I miss the exam registration deadline? Then you will not be allowed to take the exam, i.e. you will not be allowed to take the exams or your term paper will not be graded.

In which cases can I register for the exam retrospectively? Subsequent registration is only possible in the case of illness evidenced by a medical certificate or in the case of proven special burdens in the private sphere during the entire examination registration period.

Reasons that do NOT justify a subsequent examination registration:

Operator error on the part of the student
Problems with the computer
Lost TANs or did not have TANs with you
Reporting problems with Jogustine
outside the deadline
Stay abroad during the examination registration phase
For family or private obligations
Professional activity or committee work
Private leave during the exam registration phase

What are academic achievements, module examinations, partial module examinations and cumulative module examinations?

Academic achievements are credits that you achieve in a current module, but which are not included in the final grade. As a rule, an academic achievement is assigned to a course and not to the entire module. It can be, for example, a presentation, a term paper, a practical exercise or a report. If coursework is to be completed, the form will be announced by the lecturer at the beginning of the course. It is important to note that it is not necessary to register for coursework via Jogustine; the grades are not usually listed in Jogustine either. If in doubt, ask the Examinations Office whether you need to register.
To Module examinations include Final module examinations, partial module examinations and cumulative examinations. They differ from coursework in that the grades of the module examinations are always included in the final grade. Important: You must register for each module examination via Jogustine in good time during the registration period, regardless of the type of examination (term paper, written examination, oral examination, etc.). If you do not register in time, you will not be allowed to take the examination. Please note that the examination registration phase is not to be confused with the course registration phase. Final module examinations are, as the name suggests, module examinations, which are usually taken at the end of a module and can in principle cover the learning material of the entire module. Module examinations are also a form of module examination. These are partial examinations (e.g. term papers or written examinations for a specific course) that are included in the final grade, but are written separately from and in addition to the final module examination, often even a semester before the actual final module examination. Cumulative examinations are parts of a final module examination that consists of several parts. For example, many modules require two written examinations at the end, both of which are included in the final grade. Cumulative examinations are therefore a sub-form of the partial module examination.

If you have registered for an examination,

1. failing to appear
2. withdrawing after the start of the examination
3. failing to take the examination within the specified time limit or
4. failing to complete the written examination within the specified time limit

the examination will be assessed as "insufficient" (5.0). In order to assert an important reason for the failure or withdrawal, you must immediately notify the relevant examination board or the relevant examination office in writing of the valid reasons and provide credible evidence and the examination board must recognize the valid reasons.

In the event of illness, a medical certificate must be submitted to the responsible examination office immediately (usually within 3 days of the examination or submission deadline). The examination office or the examination board of the subject in which the examination was missed/cancelled due to illness is responsible. An official medical certificate may also be required.

Exception: the reasons for irregular attendance at courses (not examinations!) due to acute problems/illness are clarified directly with the course leaders. However, in the case of illness or reasons such as committee work, pregnancy or raising a child, which are already known at the beginning of the course, an informal application must also be submitted to the responsible examination office before the start of the course with supporting documents.

Important notes:

1. a medical certificate must always certify the time, nature, extent and duration of the illness and its effects on the ability to take the examination. If you are unable to take an examination for the first time, you do not need to state the functional impairment. Please use our certificate template, which you can download here.

2. hospital medical certificates and certificates from a licensed psychologist (a psychological psychotherapist) are equivalent to an official medical certificate.

3. in the event of a stroke of fate such as the death of a close relative, examinations can be withdrawn or a deadline extended.

4. in the event of unforeseeable burdens in the private sphere, such as illness of the children, an extension of the deadline may be granted or an examination may be withdrawn under certain circumstances.

5. in the case of an illness/stress that does not occur acutely but is known before the examination, an application for an extension of the deadline or writing time must be submitted in good time before the examination.

6. the following reasons will not be recognized (examples): IT problems such as viruses, defective hard disk, etc. (backups are assumed), problems on the way to the submission/exam such as late trains, traffic jams, workload, etc.

Corresponding applications must be submitted informally and immediately to the relevant examination office. The burden of proof always lies with the applicant.

In principle, interruptions to the period of study (due to committee work, illness, parental leave, study abroad of up to 2 semesters) can be taken into account against proof. For subjects in modern foreign languages, study periods of at least three months in total are planned in the countries of the target language. You should also take this into account in your time planning. If you are not required to provide proof of language skills at the start of your studies, but they are a prerequisite for admission to examinations, you should do so as early as possible to ensure a successful course of study.

If you would like to have periods of study, academic achievements and examinations from other degree programs and/or from another university or college recognized, this is possible by submitting the necessary documents.

Recognition is carried out in the respective subject to which the achievement belongs. In Faculty 02, the academic advisors are usually responsible for recognition. Please check the homepage of the respective institute/study office for office hours.

The special needs of disabled students to ensure equal opportunities must be taken into account. For example, longer deadlines or other forms of examination may be permitted on application and, if necessary, on presentation of a medical certificate or certificate from a public health officer. Please contact the examination office of the subject in which the examination is to be taken.

If the result of an examination is influenced by cheating or the use of unauthorized aids, the examination will be assessed as "insufficient" (5.0). If the course of an examination is deliberately disrupted, the continuation of the examination may be prohibited. The examination will be assessed as "insufficient". In serious cases, the responsible examination board may exclude participation in further examinations.
